Special Highlights

Winter in Kastelruth means taking time to relax, to stop for a chat at the Christmas market in Kastelruth and to share in the atmosphere of the pre-Christmas Kastelruther Spatzen concert.

Take the time to experience a traditional Kastelruth farmer’s wedding, replete with beautifully-decorated horse-drawn carriages and exquisite traditional clothing. And, naturally, to savour the culinary delights that the chefs serve up for the “Kastelruther Hoazetkuchl” (wedding feast) in January.

At the beginning of December all hell breaks loose in Kastelruth when a group of shaggy-maned, riotous “Krampus” rampage through the village and put the fear of God into the bystanders.

In March, the snow season kicks off in style with a very special music festival: “Swing and Snow” brings folk music to the mountains in all its many forms, from traditional to experimental. From early morning through to late evening, musicians and bands play on the ski slopes and in the mountain huts, restaurants and bars on and around the Alpe di Siusi.

Moonlight sledging is another late-night experience that night owls will adore. And at the end of January when the moon shines bright in the night skies, the legendary “Moonlight Classic” cross-country marathon is held on the Seiser Alm. Hundreds of racers participate in the moonlight event, and glide their way along torchlit tracks on narrow skis.

Traditionally, Easter marks the end of the winter season. The days are longer, the sun shines warmly, and the last skiing and hiking days can be enjoyed to the full on the Alpe di Siusi. It’s the perfect time to bask in the sun, relax, and recharge your batteries! And to sit under the blossoming apple trees in St. Oswald and dream of summer…
