Oswald von Wolkenstein Riding Tournament

The Oswald von Wolkenstein riding tournament is held every spring, in May or June.

The tournament consists of four stages in the villages of Castelrotto/Kastelruth, Siusi/Seis, the Laghetto di Fiè/Völser Weiher Lake and Castel Presule/Prösels Castle (Fiè/Völs).

On Friday and Saturday, a variety of festive events are organised in the villages of Castelrotto, Siusi and Fiè.

Open-Air “Kastelruther Spatzen” Concert

In June, the “Kastelruther Spatzen” will be playing live in Siusi/Seis for all of their fans and visitors to Siusi. The mammoth open-air concert has grown to become a tradition, and an unmissable date on the Spatzen’s concert calendar.

The concert venue is the area around the Siusi-Seiser Alm cable car in Siusi.

Thousands of fans flock to the villages of Castelrotto/Kastelruth and Siusi for this very special event under the open skies.

Summer Concerts

From June through to the beginning of September, the school playground of the lower-secondary school in Castelrotto/Kastelruth will be hosting a series of summer concerts from marching bands. Guests will be treated to evening entertainment of traditional and contemporary music from marching bands from all over South Tyrol and Castelrotto’s own home band.

Village Festival

The traditional village festival is always held on “Ferragosto” weekend (15th August) in Castelrotto/Kastelruth. From the school playground to the village square the streets are lined with stalls, and mouthwatering local delicacies are served. A variety of bands and marching bands provide the musical entertainment.

Processions in Castelrotto/Kastelruth

Corpus Christi (May/June), the Church Day (end of June) and the harvest thanksgiving (beginning of October) are all religious festivals in Castelrotto.

Castelrotto is famed for its beautiful traditional clothing and traditions which are still very much a part of everyday life today.

The processions always take place after Mass.

Witches’ Nights and Late-Night Shopping

Every Tuesday from the beginning of July to the end of August, the Castelrotto Tourist Board and the shopkeepers of the town organise Witches’ Nights and late-night shopping evenings with an array of fringe events including music, culinary delicacies and children’s events.

Dumpling festival

The “Knödelfest“ Dumpling Festival in Castelrotto/ Kastelruth is held on 3 dates in July and August, and is always enormously popular with guests and locals alike. The village square makes up the stage setting for for the traditional South Tyrolean delicacies, and this is also where, at 2 pm, the farming women start to cook all imaginable manner of dumplings: Dumplings with goulash, dumplings with lettuce, bacon dumplings, spinach dumplings, cheese dumplings  and, needless to say, sweet strawberry dumplings, apricot dumplings and a host of other sweet dumpling treats to round off, every one of them made by hand.

Spatzen Festival

For over 30 years now, the second weekend in October has been devoted entirely to the Kastelruther Spatzen: The mammoth Spatzenfest festival lasts for three days, and some years there are additional concerts. From Friday to Sunday, Spatzen fans flock to Castelrotto/Kastelruth to see and listen to their heroes. A vibrant fringe programme rounds provides something to suit every taste, from Nik P. to Helene Fischer and Florian Silberneisen, from Semino Rossi to Marc Pircher and DJ Ötzi, all of whom have played in Castelrotto.

Pop star hike with Alexander

Another event which has grown to become an established tradition takes place on the Tuesday hike after the Spatzenfest. Pop singer and entertainer Alexander Rier, son of Norbert Rier, takes a short 2 km walk around Castelrotto/Kastelruth with his fans followed by food and festivities. Alexander then plays a short concert and signs autographs.

The Bringing Down of the Cattle

On the Saturday before harvest begins, the traditional ceremony of bringing home the cattle takes place in Castelrotto/Kastelruth and the Seiser Alm.

This is the day when the farmers who have spent the summer months on the Seiser Alm with their cattle bid farewell to the mountains and drive the animals homewards. The event is celebrated with great festivities in Compaccio/Compatsch on the Seiser Alm and in Castelrotto, and guests can enjoy farmers’ markets, food and drink stalls and music and dancing.
